Verso 1
dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre
samavetā yuyutsavaḥ
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāś caiva
kim akurvata sañjaya

Dhṛtarāṣṭra
disse: Ó Sañjaya, que fazem meus filhos e os filhos de Pāṇḍu depois de se

said: O Sañjaya, after assembling in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukṣetra,
what did my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu do, being desirous to fight?

dṛṣṭvā tu pāṇḍavānīkaṁ
vyūḍhaṁ duryodhanas tadā
ācāryam upasaṅgamya
rājā vacanam abravīt

Sañjaya

Verso 3
ācārya mahatīṁ camūm
vyūḍhāṁ drupada-putreṇa
tava śiṣyeṇa dhīmatā

Ó
meu mestre, veja o grande exército dos filhos de Pāṇḍu, disposto com tanta
perícia pelo seu inteligente discípulo, o filho de Drupada.

my teacher, behold the great army of the sons of Pāṇḍu, so expertly arranged by
your intelligent disciple, the son of Drupada.
Verso 4
bhīmārjuna-samā yudhi
yuyudhāno virāṭaś ca
drupadaś ca mahā-rathaḥ

Aqui
neste exército, há muitos arqueiros heróicos e iguais em combate a Bhīma e
Arjuna; também há grandes guerreiros como Yuyudhāna, Virāṭa e Drupada.
Here
in this army there are many heroic bowmen equal in fighting to Bhīma and Arjuna;
there are also great fighters like Yuyudhāna, Virāṭa and Drupada.
Verso 5
kāśirājaś ca vīryavān
purujit kuntibhojaś ca
śaibyaś ca nara-puṅgavaḥ

Há
também grandes guerreiros heróicos e poderosos como Dhṛṣṭaketu, Cekitāna,
Kāśirāja, Purujit, Kuntibhoja e Śaibya.
There
are also great, heroic, powerful fighters like Dhṛṣṭaketu, Cekitāna, Kāśirāja,
Purujit, Kuntibhoja and Śaibya.
Verso 6
uttamaujāś ca vīryavān
saubhadro draupadeyāś ca
sarva eva mahā-rathāḥ
Tradução
Aqui
estão o poderoso Yudhāmanyu, o poderosíssimo Uttamaujā, o filho de Subhadrā e
os filhos de Draupadī. Todos estes guerreiros são grandes combatentes em
quadriga.
There
are the mighty Yudhāmanyu, the very powerful Uttamaujā, the son of Subhadrā and
the sons of Draupadī. All these warriors are great chariot fighters.
Verso 7
tān nibodha dvijottama
nāyakā mama sainyasya
saṁjñārthaṁ tān bravīmi te
Tradução
Ó
melhor dos brāhmaṇas, para sua informação, quero te falar sobre os capitães que
são especialmente qualificados para a liderança de minha força militar.

best of the brāhmaṇas, for your information, let me tell you about the captains
who are especially qualified to lead my military force.
Verso 8
kṛpaś ca samitiṁ-jayaḥ
aśvatthāmā vikarṇaś ca
saumadattis tathaiva ca

Há
personalidades como você mesmo, Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Aśvatthāmā, Vikarṇa e o
filho de Somadatta chamado Bhuriśravā, que são sempre vitoriosos em batalha.
There
are personalities like yourself, Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Aśvatthāmā, Vikarṇa and
the son of Somadatta called Bhuriśravā, who are always victorious in battle.
Verso 9
mad-arthe tyakta-jīvitāḥ
nānā-śastra-praharaṇāḥ
sarve yuddha-viśāradāḥ
Tradução
Temos
outros heróis que estão prontos a darem suas vidas pela minha causa. Todos eles
estão muito bem equipados com vários tipos de armamentos e todos são experientes
na ciência militar.
There
are many other heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. All
of them are well equipped with different kinds of weapons, and all are
experienced in military science.
Verso 10
balaṁ bhīṣmābhirakṣitam
paryāptaṁ tv idam eteṣāṁ
balaṁ bhīmābhirakṣitam
Tradução
Nossa
força é imensurável e temos a proteção perfeita do patriarca Bhīṣma, enquanto a
força dos Pāṇḍavas, com a proteção cuidadosa de Bhīma, é limitada.
Our
strength is immeasurable, and we are perfectly protected by Grandfather Bhīṣma,
whereas the strength of the Pāṇḍavas, carefully protected by Bhīma, is limited.
Verso 11
yathā-bhāgam avasthitāḥ
bhīṣmam evābhirakṣantu
bhavantaḥ sarva eva hi
Tradução
Agora,
todos vocês devem apoiar plenamente o patriarca Bhīṣma, por permanecerem em
seus pontos estratégicos na falange do exército.
Now
all of you must give full support to Grandfather Bhīṣma, standing at your
respective strategic points in the phalanx of the army.
Verso 12
kuru-vṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ
siṁha-nādaṁ vinadyoccaiḥ
śaṅkhaṁ dadhmau pratāpavān

Então, Bhīṣma, o altamente valente patriarca da dinastia Kuru, o avô dos guerreiros,

Then
Bhīṣma, the great valiant grandsire of the Kuru dynasty, the grandfather of the
fighters, blew his conchshell very loudly like the sound of a lion, giving
Duryodhana joy.
Verso 13
paṇavānaka-gomukhāḥ
sahasaivābhyahanyanta
sa śabdas tumulo ’bhavat

Depois

After
that, the conchshells, bugles, trumpets, drums and horns were all suddenly sounded,
and the combined sound was tumultuous.
Verso 14
mahati syandane sthitau
mādhavaḥ pāṇḍavaś caiva
divyau śaṅkhau pradadhmatuḥ

outro lado, o Senhor Kṛṣṇa e Arjuna, situados numa grande quadriga puxada por
cavalos brancos, soaram seus búzios transcendentais.
On
the other side, both Lord Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, stationed on a great chariot drawn
by white horses, sounded their transcendental conchshells.
Verso 15
devadattaṁ dhanañ-jayaḥ
pauṇḍraṁ dadhmau mahā-śaṅkhaṁ
bhīma-karmā vṛkodaraḥ
Tradução
Então,
o Senhor Kṛṣṇa soprou Seu búzio, chamado Pāñcajanya; Arjuna soprou o seu, o Devadatta;
e Bhīma, o comedor voraz e realizador de tarefas hercúleas, soprou seu terrível
búzio, chamado Pauṇḍram.
Then,
Lord Kṛṣṇa blew His conchshell, called Pāñcajanya; Arjuna blew his, the
Devadatta; and Bhīma, the voracious eater and performer of Herculean tasks,
blew his terrific conchshell called Pauṇḍram.
Versos 16-18
kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca
sughoṣa-maṇipuṣpakau
śikhaṇḍī ca mahā-rathaḥ
dhṛṣṭadyumno virāṭaś ca
sātyakiś cāparājitaḥ
sarvaśaḥ pṛthivī-pate
saubhadraś ca mahā-bāhuḥ
śaṅkhān dadhmuḥ pṛthak pṛthak
Tradução
O
rei Yudhiṣṭhira, filho de Kuntī, soprou seu búzio, o Anantavijaya, e Nakula e
Sahadeva sopraram Sughoṣa e Maṇipuṣpaka. O grande arqueiro rei de Kāśī, o
grande guerreiro Śikhaṇḍī, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Virāṭa e o inconquistável Sātyaki,

King
Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, blew his conchshell, the Anantavijaya, and
Nakula and Sahadeva blew the Sughoṣa and Maṇipuṣpaka. That great archer the
King of Kāśī, the great fighter Śikhaṇḍī, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Virāṭa and the
unconquerable Sātyaki, Drupada, the sons of Draupadī, and the others, O King,
such as the son of Subhadrā, greatly armed, all blew their respective
conchshells.
Verso 19
hṛdayāni vyadārayat
nabhaś ca pṛthivīṁ caiva
tumulo ’bhyanunādayan
Tradução
O
soar destes vários búzios se tornou estrondoso, vibrou tanto no céu como na
terra, e assim despedaçou os corações dos filhos de Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
The
blowing of these different conchshells became uproarious, and thus, vibrating
both in the sky and on the earth, it shattered the hearts of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
Verso 20
dhārtarāṣṭrān kapi-dhvajaḥ
pravṛtte śastra-sampāte
dhanur udyamya pāṇḍavaḥ
hṛṣīkeśaṁ tadā vākyam
idam āha mahī-pate
Tradução
Ó
rei, nesse momento, Arjuna, o filho de Pāṇḍu, sentado em sua quadriga, que
porta o estandarte com o emblema de Hanumān, pegou seu arco e se preparou para
disparar suas flechas, com a mira nos filhos de Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Ó rei, Arjuna

King, at that time Arjuna, the son of Pāṇḍu, who was seated in his chariot, his
flag marked with Hanumān, took up his bow and prepared to shoot his arrows,
looking at the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. O King, Arjuna then spoke to Hṛṣīkeśa [Kṛṣṇa]
these words:
Versos 21-22
senayor ubhayor madhye
rathaṁ sthāpaya me ’cyuta
yāvad etān nirīkṣe ’haṁ
yoddhu-kāmān avasthitān
kair mayā saha yoddhavyam
asmin raṇa-samudyame
Tradução
Arjuna
disse: Ó infalível, por favor conduza minha quadriga entre os dois exércitos
para que eu possa ver quem está presente aqui, quem tem desejo de lutar e com
quem terei de combater nesta grande tentativa de batalha.
Arjuna
said: O infallible one, please draw my chariot between the two armies so that I
may see who is present here, who is desirous of fighting, and with whom I must
contend in this great battle attempt.
Verso 23
ya ete ’tra samāgatāḥ
dhārtarāṣṭrasya durbuddher
yuddhe priya-cikīrṣavaḥ
Tradução
Deixe-me
ver aqueles que vieram aqui para lutar, com desejo de agradarem o malévolo
filho de Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
Let
me see those who have come here to fight, wishing to please the evil-minded son
of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
Verso 24
evam ukto hṛṣīkeśo
guḍākeśena bhārata
senayor ubhayor madhye
sthāpayitvā rathottamam

Sañjaya
disse: Ó descendente de Bhārata, assim ordenado por Arjuna, o Senhor Kṛṣṇa
conduziu a excelente quadriga até o meio dos dois exércitos.
Sañjaya
said: O descendant of Bharata, being thus addressed by Arjuna, Lord Kṛṣṇa drew
up the fine chariot in the midst of the armies of both parties.
Verso 25
sarveṣāṁ ca mahī-kṣitām
uvāca pārtha paśyaitān
samavetān kurūn iti
Tradução
Na
presença de Bhīṣma, Drona e todos os outros líderes do mundo, Hṛṣīkeśa, o
Senhor, disse: Veja, Pārtha, todos os Kurus que estão reunidos aqui.
In
the presence of Bhīṣma, Droṇa and all other chieftains of the world, Hṛṣīkeśa,
the Lord, said, Just behold, Pārtha, all the Kurus who are assembled here.
Verso 26
pitṝn atha pitāmahān
ācāryān mātulān bhrātṝn
putrān pautrān sakhīṁs tathā
śvaśurān suhṛdaś caiva
senayor ubhayor api
Tradução
Lá,
Arjuna pôde ver, entre os exércitos dos dois grupos, seus pais, avós,
professores, tios maternos, irmãos, filhos, netos, amigos e também seu sogro e
benquerentes – todos presentes ali.
There
Arjuna could see, within the midst of the armies of both parties, his fathers,
grandfathers, teachers, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, friends,
and also his father-in-law and well – wishers-all present there.
Verso 27
sarvān bandhūn avasthitān
kṛpayā parayāviṣṭo
viṣīdann idam abravīt

Quando
o filho de Kuntī, Arjuna, viu todos esses vários graus de amigos e parentes,
ficou tomado pela compaixão e falou como se segue:
When
the son of Kuntī, Arjuna, saw all these different grades of friends and
relatives, he became overwhelmed with compassion and spoke thus:
Verso 28
dṛṣṭvemaṁ sva-janaṁ kṛṣṇa
yuyutsuṁ samupasthitam
sīdanti mama gātrāṇi
mukhaṁ ca pariśuṣyati
Tradução
Arjuna
disse: Meu querido Kṛṣṇa, ao ver meus amigos e parentes presentes perante mim
com tamanho espírito de luta, sinto os membros de meu corpo tremerem e minha
boca secar.
Arjuna
said: My dear Kṛṣṇa, seeing my friends and relatives present before me in such
a fighting spirit, I feel the limbs of my body quivering and my mouth drying
up.
Verso 29
roma-harṣaś ca jāyate
gāṇḍīvaṁ sraṁsate hastāt
tvak caiva paridahyate

Meu
corpo inteiro treme e meu cabelo está arrepiado. Meu arco Gāṇḍīva escorrega da
minha mão e minha pele arde.
My
whole body is trembling, and my hair is standing on end. My bow Gāṇḍīva is
slipping from my hand, and my skin is burning.
Verso 30
bhramatīva ca me manaḥ
nimittāni ca paśyāmi
viparītāni keśava
Tradução
Agora,
sinto-me incapaz de ficar em pé. Esqueço-me de mim mesmo e minha mente vacila.
Prevejo unicamente o mal, ó matador do demônio Keśī.
I
am now unable to stand here any longer. I am forgetting myself, and my mind is
reeling. I foresee only evil, O killer of the Keśī demon.
Versos 31
hatvā sva-janam āhave
na kāṅkṣe vijayaṁ kṛṣṇa
na ca rājyaṁ sukhāni ca
Tradução
Não
vejo como algum benefício pode vir da matança de meus próprios familiares nesta
batalha, nem posso eu, meu querido Kṛṣṇa, desejar qualquer vitória, reino ou
felicidade subsequentes.
I
do not see how any good can come from killing my own kinsmen in this battle,
nor can I, my dear Kṛṣṇa, desire any subsequent victory, kingdom, or happiness.
Versos 32-35
kiṁ bhogair jīvitena vā
yeṣām arthe kāṅkṣitaṁ no
rājyaṁ bhogāḥ sukhāni ca
prāṇāṁs tyaktvā dhanāni ca
ācāryāḥ pitaraḥ putrās
tathaiva ca pitāmahāḥ
śyālāḥ sambandhinas tathā
etān na hantum icchāmi
ghnato ’pi madhusūdana
hetoḥ kiṁ nu mahī-kṛte
nihatya dhārtarāṣṭrān naḥ
kā prītiḥ syāj janārdana

Ó
Govinda, qual a utilidade de reinos, felicidade ou mesmo a própria vida para
nós quando todos por quem podemos desejá-los agora estão enfileirados neste
campo de batalha? Ó Madhusūdana, quando professores, pais, filhos, avós, tios
maternos, sogros, netos, cunhados e todos os parentes estão prontos para dar
suas vidas e propriedades e estão perante mim, por que desejaria matá-los, ainda
que eu sobreviva? Ó mantenedor de todas as criaturas, não estou preparado para
lutar com eles mesmo em troca dos três mundos, muito menos por esta terra.
O
Govinda, of what avail to us are kingdoms, happiness or even life itself when
all those for whom we may desire them are now arrayed in this battlefield? O
Madhusūdana, when teachers, fathers, sons, grandfathers, maternal uncles,
fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law and all relatives are ready to give
up their lives and properties and are standing before me, then why should I
wish to kill them, though I may survive? O maintainer of all creatures, I am
not prepared to fight with them even in exchange for the three worlds, let
alone this earth.
Verso 36
hatvaitān ātatāyinaḥ
tasmān nārhā vayaṁ hantuṁ
dhārtarāṣṭrān sa-bāndhavān
sva-janaṁ hi kathaṁ hatvā
sukhinaḥ syāma mādhava
Tradução
O
pecado nos dominará se matarmos esses agressores. Por isso, não é correto que
matemos os filhos de Dhṛtarāṣṭra e nossos amigos. O que ganharemos, ó Kṛṣṇa,
esposo da deusa da fortuna, e como poderemos ser felizes se matarmos nossos próprios
familiares?
Sin
will overcome us if we slay such aggressors. Therefore it is not proper for us
to kill the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and our friends. What should we gain, O Kṛṣṇa,
husband of the goddess of fortune, and how could we be happy by killing our own
kinsmen?
Versos 37-38
lobhopahata-cetasaḥ
kula-kṣaya-kṛtaṁ doṣaṁ
mitra-drohe ca pātakam
pāpād asmān nivartitum
kula-kṣaya-kṛtaṁ doṣaṁ
prapaśyadbhir janārdana
Tradução
Ó
Janārdana, apesar destes homens, dominados pela ganância, não verem falta em
matar seus próprios familiares ou lutar contra amigos, por que nós, com
conhecimento sobre o pecado, devemos nos empenhar nesses atos?
O
Janārdana, although these men, overtaken by greed, see no fault in killing
one’s family or quarreling with friends, why should we, with knowledge of the
sin, engage in these acts?
Verso 39
kula-dharmāḥ sanātanāḥ
dharme naṣṭe kulaṁ kṛtsnam
adharmo ’bhibhavaty uta
Tradução
Com
a destruição da dinastia, a tradição familiar eterna se arruína e assim o resto
da família se torna envolvida em práticas irreligiosas.
With
the destruction of dynasty, the eternal family tradition is vanquished, and
thus the rest of the family becomes involved in irreligious practice.
Verso 40
praduṣyanti kula-striyaḥ
strīṣu duṣṭāsu vārṣṇeya
jāyate varṇa-saṅkaraḥ
Tradução
Quando
a irreligião se torna proeminente na família, ó Kṛṣṇa, as mulheres da família
se corrompem, e da degradação das mulheres, ó descendente de Vṛṣṇi, vem
progênie indesejada.
When
irreligion is prominent in the family, O Kṛṣṇa, the women of the family become
corrupt, and from the degradation of womanhood, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, comes
unwanted progeny.
Verso 41
kula-ghnānāṁ kulasya ca
patanti pitaro hy eṣāṁ
lupta-piṇḍodaka-kriyāḥ
Tradução
Quando
há aumento da população indesejada, cria-se uma situação infernal tanto para a
família quanto para aqueles que destroem a tradição familiar. Nessas famílias
corruptas, não há oferendas de oblações de alimento e água para os
antepassados.
When
there is increase of unwanted population, a hellish situation is created both
for the family and for those who destroy the family tradition. In such corrupt
families, there is no offering of oblations of food and water to the ancestors.
Verso 42
varṇa-saṅkara-kārakaiḥ
utsādyante jāti-dharmāḥ
kula-dharmāś ca śāśvatāḥ

Por
causa das más ações dos destruidores da tradição familiar, todos os tipos de
projetos comunitários e atividades para o bem-estar familiar são devastados.
Due
to the evil deeds of the destroyers of family tradition, all kinds of community
projects and family welfare activities are devastated.
Verso 43
manuṣyāṇāṁ janārdana
narake niyataṁ vāso
bhavatīty anuśuśruma

Ó
Kṛṣṇa, mantenedor das pessoas, eu ouvi da sucessão discipular que quem destrói
as tradições familiares reside no inferno para sempre.
O
Kṛṣṇa, maintainer of the people, I have heard by disciplic succession that
those who destroy family traditions dwell always in hell.
Verso 44
kartuṁ vyavasitā vayam
yad rājya-sukha-lobhena
hantuṁ sva-janam udyatāḥ
Tradução
Ai
de mim! Como é estranho que nos preparemos para cometer atos tão pecaminosos,
compelidos pelo desejo de gozar a felicidade régia.
Alas,
how strange it is that we are preparing to commit greatly sinful acts, driven
by the desire to enjoy royal happiness.
Verso 45
aśastraṁ śastra-pāṇayaḥ
dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇe hanyus
tan me kṣema-taraṁ bhavet
Tradução
Considero
que seria melhor os filhos de Dhṛtarāṣṭra me matarem desarmado e sem
resistência, do que lutar contra eles.
I
would consider it better for the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra to kill me unarmed and
unresisting, rather than fight with them.
Verso 46
evam uktvārjunaḥ saṅkhye
rathopastha upāviśat
visṛjya sa-śaraṁ cāpaṁ
śoka-saṁvigna-mānasaḥ
Tradução
Sañjaya
disse: Arjuna, depois de falar desse jeito no campo de batalha, pôs seu arco e
flechas de lado e se sentou na quadriga, com sua mente dominada pela angústia.
Sañjaya
said: Arjuna, having thus spoken on the battlefield, cast aside his bow and
arrows and sat down on the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with grief.
